Baz "Bass" Outlaw: An 1893 Texas Legal Document Concerning the Colorful Former Ranger and Deputy U.S. Marshal Who was Killed by John Selman. Outlaw had served as a Texas Ranger from 1885 to 1892, when he was honorably discharged because of his chronic intoxication. He was temporarily reinstated as a Ranger by personal order of Captain Frank Jones the following year, but in April, 1894 was working as a Deputy U.S. Marshal in Alpine, Texas under Dick Ware. Bass was in El Paso to testify as a court witness when a dispute with Ware caused him to go on a drunken binge. He was killed by John Selman as the El Paso lawman sought to subdue him after a drunken Outlaw discharged his gun in a popular bawdy house. In the melee which resulted in his death Bass shot and killed Ranger Joe McKidrict and fired at Selman, but missed.

Offered here is an order for a witness to testify in an unspecified criminal preceding against Outlaw, issued in El Paso on January 7th, 1893. 8.25" x 7", and in excellent condition.
