1781." Published in Paris in 1782 by Esnauts & Rapilly. Beautifully colored in pastels. Apparently an extremely rare map. We can find no auction records. It shows the battle placements around Yorktown, as well as the fleet of Admiral de Grasse which has prevented the arrival of English reinforcements and forced their ships to retreat. The HMS Terrible is shown in flames. Some interesting place names include the "Potowmarck" and "Raphannok" rivers. Opposing the British are the troops of Washington, La Fayette, Rochambeau and the Marquis de St. Simon. We believe the map was issued to highlight the critical role played by France in the final, humiliating defeat of their arch-rivals, the British. Narrow, vertical mounting hinge on verso, as made. Wide borders, beautiful condition, as good as it gets!
