Battle of Antietam: 4-Page Soldier's Letter Graphically Describing the Battle.
4.5" x 7.5" bifolium letter written on all sides in pencil, including some lines written in the opposite direction between lines. "Camp Sharps Burg Friday Sept. 19th '62." The writer was Philip Crewell, Co. F, 34th Regiment New York Infantry. In part: "... the heaviest battle that ever was fought on gods pastoral was fought here the 17 of this month. There was fighting five days since last Saturday. Our loss of the 17th was heavy. Our Regt. went in with 382 and came out with 190 left.... John Dixon was shot through the heart. Sergeant James Crist has had his right leg taken off... William H. Lewis is shot dead. The ball went in the bridge of his nose and came out the back side of his head... the battle at Fair Oaks was nothing but a shooting to this.. the rebels turned our left flank... the rebels were face to face within 50 feet of each other, and if we hadn't went down a kind of a hill, they would have killed all of us. But we rallied back of our cannon and drove them back with double our loss. The report is now that there is 20 to 25 thousand dead on the field. Even now, they lay within 20 feet of me... I fired 13 shots and if I can't hit a man five rods off, I think I had better practice. But I guess they sleep sound... The rebels are gone back over the river with the 50,000 men and about all their artillery is taken from them... Our General Sedgwick is wounded... the sun is going down on the battle field in front of me, where lay all the dead rebels yet, about 5,000." A transcription is provided as well as 60+ pages of research, battle maps and photos to enhance Crewell's amazing story. There are military records for each of the soldiers that Crewell mentions in the letter (killed, wounded, etc.).
