    Description

Army Officer's Letter from Fort Reno Mentioning the Presence of a Company of Buffalo Soldiers. Three pages of a lined bifolium, 5.75" x 9.25"; Fort Reno, I[ndian] T[erritory], [Oklahoma]; June 19, 1879. Content is relaying friendly news including new status of promotions, and lists the troops presently at the fort: "We have a fine place here, Iago; the best quarters I have ever had and a pleasant garrison. Just at present we are pretty well crowded as there are ten (10) companies here - 2, 16th Infantry - 2, 23d Infantry - 5, 4th Cavy & 1, 10th Cavy. Many of those in the 4th are friends of yours..." The signature is difficult to make out, but we do know the writer is a recently promoted captain. Of note, the 10th Cavalry was a company of black soldiers.

    Condition:
Gently toned with bold ink. Partial separations occurring at top horizontal fold of both pages, including a spot of paper loss not affecting any words and mentioned only for the sake of accuracy.
