    The Tombstone and Arizona Territory Collection

    Arizona Territory: Two Early Bank Drafts. Two early Tucson bank drafts relating to Tombstone history. 1) A Pima County Bank (Tucson) draft, 7 5/8" x 3", unnumbered, dated January 10, 1879, for the amount of $85.00 payable to J. L. Ward. The check is signed "L. M. Jacobs & Company," and is stamped in red ink. The front of the check also bears an uncancelled two cent postage stamp. Ward's signature is on the back of the draft. Jerome L. Ward (1833-1913) was born in New York and served in the Union army in the Civil War. He was elected Cochise County Sheriff in 1883 and later served as a guard at the Yuma Territorial Prison. 2) A Pima County Bank (Tucson) draft, 8" x 3 3/8", "No. B1005", dated May 16 [?], 1880, for the amount of $250.00 payable to Charles A. Bertholomew. The check is signed by bank cashier William A. Scott, Jr. and is stamped in blue ink. Bartholomew's signature is on the back of the check. Charles A. Bartholomew served as a shot-gun messenger for Wells Fargo and as a Tombstone policeman. This draft contains sever small holes, but otherwise it is in good condition. The first draft is in good condition.
