    Description

Appomattox Parole Pass. One partially-printed page, 7.75" x 3", Appomattox Court House [Virginia], April 10, 1865, granting "The Bearer Serg. W McK Burroughs Co. B, Hugurs [Huger's] Batt. of Arty, a Paroled Prisoner of the Army of Northern Virginia . . . permission to go to his house, and there to remain undisturbed." Signed by Maj. Tyler C. Jordan, commander of Burroughs' battalion. William McKinney Burroughs enlisted as a sergeant in Co. "C," Madison (Louisiana) Light Artillery, on May 23, 1861. Folds show some separation with one repair made with tape to the verso. Moderately foxed throughout. Small triangular punch at the lower edge.

The Army of Northern Virginia's defeated soldiers were allowed to return to their homes following General Lee's surrender on April 9, 1865. With ongoing hostilities in many areas of the South, these men were issued paroles that amounted to safe travel passes. As only a few thousand of these paroles were originally issued, they are quite uncommon today.
