Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna Farewell Broadside. Single oversized sheet, 12/75" x 20", Fortaleza de Perote, May 26, 1845. Printed by Imprenta de Lara. At top: "Antonio Lopez de Santa-Anna bids farewell to his countrymen." Santa Anna was forced to step down as president (his fifth term) after encountering stiff opposition against his raising of taxes. Several Mexican states, including Yucatan and Laredo, declared themselves independent. Instead of waiting to be deposed, Santa Anna left office and fearing for his life fled the capital. He was captured in January of 1845 and exiled to Cuba. This printed broadside contains the Santa Anna's speech delivered at the Castle of Perote (Fortaleza de Perote) shortly before leaving Mexico. In addition to saying goodbye, Santa Anna explains that he has done nothing wrong and asks that his actions be reviewed in the future. In part: "Countrymen! I don't blame anyone: I make mention of these acts so that you will not forget to make a judgment in another time, not now, without being incited by crime; I have sacrificed everything to avoid a civil war, and any triumph at the cost of Mexican blood and cadavers. I have given up country, power, glory and my own interests to pay heed to my conscience. My rights to the presidency were unquestionable. One or two battles, the taking of one or two cities, could have possibly been enough for me to resume power... " Santa Anna returned to Mexico in 1846 to take command of the armed forces against the US during the Mexican War. He would once again become president, and was subsequently deposed and exiled in 1851.
The top left corner of the broadside is torn away, and there is paper loss along a vertical fold. Unlisted in OCLC.
