Anti-Civil Rights Flyer: Rules for Conduct in Sit-Down Demonstrations. One page, 8.5" x 11", "Atlanta Area," circa 1960. Distributed by one of the various white citizens councils or other anti-segregation/white supremacist organization, this flyer provides twelve "directives" for those taking part in the sit-ins such as: "TAKE A BATH. (Do not be afraid! Five NEW YORK Doctors has proved that a bath will not hurt you"; "EMPTY YOUR POCKETS (Leave zip gun, razor, congo beads, MAU-MAU literature, Ivory Statue of Earl Warren, guns, brass knucks, and Parole Card at home"; and "IF REFUSED SERVICE OR ASKED TO MOVE (Go into your act of Social Pitty, show your Margaret Long Social Card . . . Whine, and squeeze out a tear or two. We must arouse the pity for mistreated (refrain from snickering) Negro citizens." Folds. Small rust stain from a paperclip at upper and lower left corners. Two small pinholes at upper left corner. Small .25" tear at lower edge. From the Maude Ballou Civil Rights Papers.
