Annie Oakley: Travel Trunk....

Annie Oakley: Travel Trunk. Though it looks like a footlocker of later vintage, this camp trunk or army locker was manufactured circa 1917. It is of wood box construction (12" deep, 30" long, and 16.5" wide) with a black enameled sheet-steel exterior skin, steel edge and corner reinforcements, nickel-plated clasps and a hinged center lock. The fitted interior tray has the initials "AO" penciled on the bottom. On the top are block letters painted with a stencil spelling out "Annie/ Oakley." The letters are 3" high. There are rusted spots and superficial corrosion scattered throughout, but the locker is intact and clean, especially the interior, and the lettering is vivid and unretouched. Annie and Frank most likely used it as they toured military camps during World War I, putting on demonstrations to raise troop morale, to sell Liberty Bonds, and to raise money for the Red Cross. The name on the top would allow the hinged lid to be propped open as a sort of signboard. The interior is large enough to have held an assortment of weapons and ammunition (and maybe apples to shoot off Dave's head?). This lot is from the collection of Bess Edwards, grand-niece of Annie Oakley, and will be accompanied by a signed letter from her authenticating this item as described.
