An Act, to Organise [sic] a General Land Office. Two pages, 7.75" x 12.5, n. p., n. d. [circa December 1836]. The act, proposed during the First Congress of the Republic of Texas, is broken up into fourteen sections which include the General Land Office's creation, stipulations for an elected commissioner to oversee the office and an "inferior officer" to function as the chief clerk, the creation of a seal for the office, the establishment of district offices throughout the republic, the appointment of surveyors general, etc. Smoothed folds with some separation at the edges; repaired in two places at the right edge with tape. Unevenly toned. Chipping at lower left edge.

The law creating the General Land Office was passed on December 22, 1836, and John P. Borden was elected as the first land commissioner. The office was responsible for the translation of Spanish and Mexican land grants as well as the issuance of headrights, military bounties, and homestead exemptions.
