ADVENTURE GUM COMPLETE SET. In 1956, the marginal trading card maker, Gum Products released the 100-subject issue called "Adventure Gum." This was a lowbudget fare that featured many generic and uninspiring topics. However, incorporated into its numbers were quite a few prizefighters, including Joe Lewis and Marciano. Among these, there appears the image of Max Schmeling on card #86. And this one, in a very dubious background identity, featured a swastika. By 1956 standards, such an image on a trading card was "ver-boten." Reports have since circulated that this provocative card was culled at production and thrrefore abnormally scarce today. In any event, the condition of this offered set, complete with the Schmeling card, is NM-NM/MT. The only exception is #55, Agganis, which has a minor corner ding (EX/MT). The other qualification in this set, which characterizes the issue, is faulty centering. None are imbalance worse than 80/20, but few are perfect. Nice set, very much pack-fresh. We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
