    A Victorian Burl Walnut Box, mid-19th century
    4-3/4 x 12-1/2 x 9-1/8 inches

    The box with two inscriptions to interior. In 1958, John Steinbeck's grandfather John gave the box to his wife Almira, inscribing it "For my dear Almira Jerusalem June 1, 1858." John Steinbeck gave the box to his third wife Elaine in 1950, the year they wed, inscribing it, "For my dear Elaine New York, Dec. 28, 1950."

    Condition: Overall good condition and presentation with wear appropriate to age and use, including replaced latch, stable cracks to veneer, and fine surface scratches and abrasions throughout.
