A Colorful 1854 Letter Written from Clarksville, Texas Describing a Murder. The writer, James Whitaker relates the episode in detail. A man named Peabody, "a wealthy man he had a jewelry shop" was caught in the act of assaulting a "free mulatto girl" by a "poor man" named Weston. Weston chased him off, but Peabody later came to Weston's house, apparently in an effort to buy or otherwise ensure his silence. But Weston "was not going to be run over" and drew a pistol. An almost comical struggle ensued, ending with Weston firing a fatal shot. The writer of the letter muses, "Some of the men think no more of killing a man here than you would of killing a hog." A wonderful vignette of life in a Texas town of the 1850s. One 7.25" x 10" sheet, both sides, in fine condition, with just a couple trivial light age marks.
