49er Died on the Banks of The Gila River En Route to the Gold Fields of California ca. 1850. A. S. Basye Autograph Letter Signed "A. S. Basye". Four pages 7.25" x 12.50", letter and cover. A fellow gold miner, and traveling companion writing to the deceased father, Townsend Stiles, Cape May County, New Jersey, February 5, 1850, with clear oval Sacramento territorial postmark (in part), "It becomes my painful duty to convey to you through the medium the painful and melancholy information of the death of your son, Lewis Stiles. He left the state of Missouri last April for California. We reached the waters of the Gila when he was attacked with violent diarrhea. He lasted 20 days and we hauled him in our wagon for a while but finally he could not stand it, we were induced to build him a boat. He died on the banks of the Gila in November, 1849. We placed him upon the boat as he was dying as was his dying request and conveyed him down the river for one day until we reached some high ground upon which to bury him. We secured his body from the wolves that infest the county. He had a rifle gun which I was compelled to dispose of. He lived 12 months upon the Osage River where I became acquainted with him but a short time previous to our expedition." Very historical account of one of many 49ers that did not make it.

    Fine-very fine.
