1955 TOPPS DOUBLE HEADER SET. As they were about to capture supremacy in the industry, Topps crafted a midseason auxiliary baseball production, dubbing it "Double Headers." It was reasoned 275 that such an issue, presented in a design radically divergent from their primary release, would provide an afterburner to sales in baseball cards. The success of "Double Headers" can now be measured in the relative few of these that remain today. The project posed two players per card, encompassing 66 different to yield 132 images -- all drawn from low numbers appearing in the standard spring issue. Offered here is a complete unit of that modestly accepted production. The quality of this set is almost entirely a function of light to mild wear at the lower corners. Our examination affirmed only one crease in the set (#53/54, Amoros/ Herman), while the large majority are minimally EX+. Specifically, the condition of this set analyzes: 17% NM (Robinson and Killebrew); 46% EX/ MT (Banks, Kaline and Aaron); 32% EX (Irvin, Williams and Spahn); and 5% VG-VG/EX.
