    Description

1950 BOWMAN "WILD WEST" SET. Among the several non-sport classics of the post-war era is Bowman’s 180-card production entitled "Wild West." At the time of its release, the trading card world was Bowman’s oyster, but the creators of this colossal production compromised nothing. By way of beautiful and unfettered artistry, they provided their customers with the best that the industry could create. Though aimed at a younger clientele, the narrative furnished on these cards is mature and enlightening. And considering its categorization into eight sections, all the ingredients were applied to this ambitious effort which now constitute the legend that it is. The issue’s organization into sections, with numerical blocks from each section released sequentially, naturally caused a ‘last series’ shortage phenomenon (the last eight numbers of the first section, and the last four numbers of the others). Ultimately, "Wild West" is a very difficult set to pursue, and finalizing it in the condition offered here is virtually prohibitive. This is an exceptional set, and its condition analyzes (with last series indicated in parentheses) as: EX/MT/better 28% (14%); EX/EX+ 38% (61%); VG/EX 24% (14%) and VG 10% (11%). We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
