1945 ALL-STAR GAME PROGRAM. Perhaps one of the most flagrant omissions in the chronicles of All- Star play is the denial of a 1945 tilt. There was indeed an All-Star Game that year. It was orchestrated by the U.S. Navy and played at Pearl Harbor. Under the direction of one Lt. Bill Dickey, stars rostered in the American League (and affiliate teams) were pitted against the senior circuit’s same. Admittedly, a few of baseball’s best could not participate, but the rosters for that event were superior to any Major League team in 1945. Here offered is the program from that game. It is a fourteen-page publication, complete with individual pictures for each squad. We may not know the details or outcome of the game (unscored), but we’re sure a good time was had by all. This program is in immaculate EX/MT condition with only a mild crease through the lower right corner. Along with a few journeymen Major Leaguers and promising minor league youngsters, luminaries filled the line-ups for both teams. The American League boasted Fred Hutchinson, Pesky, Lum Harris, Hemsley, Bob Lemon and Ted Williams. The National League, managed by Billy Herman, featured Herman Franks, Lavagetto, Scheffing, Hugh Casey and Stan Musial. Arguably, the best Major League talent to be mustered for one game in 1945 was this one.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
