Description
1938 CARRERAS TOBACCO "FILM FAVOURITES" COMPLETE SET. As the genre of tobacco inserts withered in the U.S., British cigarette makers seemed to seize the banner and perpetuate the institution into the late ‘30’s. Taste in the British Isles centered on the performing arts, particularly Hollywood. And typical of that consumer enthusiasm is demonstrated in this 50-card production called "Film Favourites." This particular issue was sponsored by Carreras Ltd., and is profoundly reminiscent of our T205 baseball production. The cards measure about 1 3/8" x 2 5/8" and are highlighted in gold border. And as well, each card has a maturely written biography on the reverse. However, unlike the usual crop of T205’s found these days, this set’s elements are magnificently wellpreserved. Very little wear is evident in borders or corners; perhaps five cards are EX while the balance is nearly all NM-NM/MT. Among the celebrities depicted are Bing Crosby, Charles Laughton, Joan Crawford, Clark Gable, Cary Grant, Paul Muni, Spencer Tracy, Greta Garbo, Bette Davis, Marlene Dietrich and Gary Cooper.
