    Description

    1933 SANELLA BABE RUTH.

We must acknowledge that most period Babe Ruth cards were provided by Goudey.  With an open mind, we should also confess that the images of none of them are particularly envigorating - static poses and heavy colors.  In 1933, it was a packaged-food magnate in Germany that provided its customers with a different view of the Sultan.  Of all things, this outfit specialized in margarine, and was known across Deutschland as Sanella.  Offered here is a rendering of Ruth that, aesthetically, far exceeds any gum cards in the Western Hemisphere.  This one is about 4 1/8" x 2 3/4" (actually, 100mm x 75mm).  But what strikes the eye is the sunwashed color and the demonstrated dynamic might that we only read about.  It's captured here.  There's a lot of German printed on the reverse, and we assume that most of it says good stuff about Ruth.  For the final delight, this card, despite its dimension and fragile stock, is in magnificent NM/MT condition.
