    1927 GOLF "TROPHY".

Well, maybe not exactly a "trophy," but yet an enduring memento for "Second Place."  We have not a clue what the event was, except that it was a Handicap Tournament, held in 1927 and won by a duffer named Frank Orr.  (All these pertinents are fashionably detailed on the front of the piece.)  Essentially, it's a box made of heavy-gauge steel which, in turn, was silver plated to a high sheen.  Less the embellishing figures (golf ball and club), it measures about 4 1/2" x 3" x 1 3/4", and is crafted with heavy-duty hinges.  The wonderful virtue of this piece, aside from its splendid presence, is that it's functional.  (The first place trophy may have been a loving cup that only gathers cobwebs; this box, on the other hand, will comfortably hold cigarettes.)  It remains in utterly NM/MT condition.   Please note: Due to the size and/or weight of this lot, additional shipping costs may apply.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
