    Description

1848 Charleston SERVANT Slave Hire Badge. Number 2522. A flat diamond-shaped tag with clipped corners, holed at the top for suspension, 50mm x 51mm. Manufactured by local silversmith William Rouse who, possibly motivated by extra profit, made this badge smaller than in previous years. The elements on the front are as follows (top to bottom): "CHARLESTON" in a crescent-shaped bar punch; an incuse "2522" in individual punches (the second "2" a bit light at the top); "SERVANT" in a rectangular punch; and "1848" bar punched. Generally in very good to fine condition with surfaces a bit rough and dark coloration, though giving a nice appearance.
