An official copy of Sherman's Farewell Address signed by Horace G.H. Tarr, who was wounded at the Battle of Peachtree Creek

[William T. Sherman]. An Official Copy of General Sherman's Farewell Address Signed by Horace G.H. Tarr. Three pages, on 7.75" x 12.25" bifolium, signed "HGH Tarr" as "Capt and A[cting] A[ssistant] A[djutant] Gen[era]l" on the verso, Washington, May 30, 1865. Written not in Sherman's hand, but copied by L.M. Dayton, his assistant-adjunct-general for distribution to the regiments. The copy offered here was sent to the 20th Connecticut Regiment, and signed for by Tarr. Sherman's farewell address was later issued as Special Field Orders No. 76, and given to servicemen as a recognition of their wartime record.

Eloquently, and with passion, Sherman reminisces on the war. In part: "A doubt still clouded our future, but we solved the problem and destroyed Atlanta, struck boldly across the state of Georgia, severed all the main arteries of life to our enemies, and Christmas found us in Savannah." The granite-willed general goes on to compellingly speak of marches fraught with peril, Confederate negotiations and ends wishing his soldiers peace, but rallies for them to stay at the ready.

Horace G.H. Tarr enlisted as a private on November 4, 1862 into Company "K", Connecticut 20th Infantry. He was promoted to Sergeant Major on May 4, 1863, Adjutant on September 2, 1863, and captain in Company "F" on May 11, 1864. He was wounded at the Battle of Peachtree Creek on July 20, 1864, during the Atlanta Campaign.

Condition: Folded to fit in an envelope, yellowing at the folds with an otherwise even tone. Slight areas of separation at the vertical fold.

This was my first time dealing with an auction house, and I am 100% completely impressed with Heritage. There is not an aspect of this process that I have a critique for.
