[William Penn vs. Lord Baltimore]. Letter Concerning Boundary Dispute. Two pages, bifolium, 8.25" x 10", August 12, 1757, to Ferdinand John Paris. Written by Hugh Hamersley, the secretary to Frederick Calvert, Sixth Baron Baltimore and addressed to Ferdinand John Paris, London lawyer, and representative of the family of William Penn, concerning the long-running boundary dispute between the two parties that would shape the borders of what would eventually become the states Pennsylvania and Maryland.

Baltimore's secretary writes, in part: "I am very Sorry your Answers to the Observations made by Lord Baltimore's Counsel came so very late in the day, that it has been Impossible to give them their due Consideration before the Vacation had Commenced, by the Lockeepr's final Closing of all business in the foreroom..."

Penn vs. Baltimore, also referred to as the Penn-Calvert Boundary Dispute began in 1683 when Penn, who had been granted a charter for Pennsylvania by King Charles II, met with Lord Baltimore in the colonies at New Castle, Delaware, and the two men disagreed on where the borders lie. The legal conflict lasted well after the two men had died, being carried on by the heirs and families of both men until 1769, when King George III approved the boundaries set by English surveyors Charles Mason and Jeremiah Dixon. Both families lost their colonies a mere seven years later, during the American Revolution.
