[Whaling License]. French Whaling Permit, circa 1791. Three printed pages, 8.5" x 11", in French, Paris, August 19, 1791. Issued during the reign of King Louis XVI, this fishing license was given to the French whaling vessel Nantucquois, presumably now owned by an American, exempting her from the decree of March 4, 1791 (forbidding the importation of ships from outside of France), and permitting "the inhabitants of the island of Nantucket [Massachusetts], who wish to establish themselves in France to come and indulge in fishing for whales" if they complete the "terms and conditions of their establishment in France." Signed in print by Secretary General Lagarde.

Bound at the left edge. Areas of soiling along the right edge at the upper left corner of the first page. Lower edges are uncut with evidence of waterstaining. Scattered spots of foxing throughout. Bound into unprinted wraps of heavy stock.
