    Description

[Vicksburg Campaign] General Order No. 72. Five pages, 7.75" x 12", "Battlefield in rear of Vicksburg," May 30, 1863. This is a retained copy of Major General John A. McClernand's congratulatory order to his men. It reads in part:

"History affords no more brilliant example of soldierly qualities. Your victories have followed in such rapid succession that their echoes have not yet reached the country." He continues: "Yourselves striking out a new path, your comrades of the Army of the Tennessee followed, and a way was there opened for them to redeem previous disappointments."

The order was published by the press and insulted General Grant, who was at that time in command of the Army of the Tennessee. Grant promptly relieved him of duty.

John Alexander McClernand (1812-1900) was commander of the Army of the Mississippi during the Vicksburg Campaign.
