[Vicksburg Campaign - Battle of Snyder's Bluff]. Three Letters Related to the Siege of Vicksburg. The earlier of the two letters, a four page letter measuring 6.25" x 8", was written by Clarkson Fogg of the 4th West Virginia Infantry to his father, Thomas Fogg, relaying details of the Battle of Snyder's Bluff five days earlier. Writing on May 3, 1863, from "near Vicksburg," Clarkson gives his account, in part: "Our Division left camp at Young's Point on the 29th inst. on transports . . . The fleet consisted of ten or twelve transport, three mortars, two iron-clads, (the Baron DeKalb, and the new, turreted boat, heavily iron-clad, Choctaw,) and four wooden gun-boats. The next day the expedition went up 2 miles further, just out of range of the rebel batteries. The gun-boats proceeded still further up and engaged the enemy's batteries. The Choctaw went up within 800 yards of a battery of two 128 pounders and after two hours firing fell back down the river, having been hit 53 times without serious damage. . . . This was the first engagement of the Choctaw . . . The Baron DeKalb engaged a battery near the shore, landed 30 to 40 marines, drove the rebels from the guns . . . and spiked them . . . On Thursday evening the infantry disembarked for the first time . . . They [the Confederates] soon opened from three or four guns without effect. The next day . . . all the gun-boats opened on the enemy which was returned for a short time, but it soon became too hot for the rebs, and after a short time the firing on their part ceased."

Three weeks later, a second letter was sent from the 4th West Virginia, this time from Private Lewis Love to Thomas Fogg. Writing during the siege of Vicksburg on May 26, 1863, Love relates the tragic death of Thomas' son, Clarkson, in full as written: "I Feel it my painful duty to write to you on this occasion with the sad intelligence of the Death of one of our bravest Boys your Son. He was killed on the 19th while making one of the most galant charges of the war. in honor to him I must say that he died at his post many of our brave Boys fell by his side our loss is very great upwards of 150 killed and wounded our regiment is laying within one hundred yards of the enemies works and while I write the balls are whistling over my head The enemy is surrounded they can not get out without breaking our lines which will be hard to do."

With the two war-dated letters is an additional letter addressed to Waldo Fogg, the brother of Clarkson, dated April 18, 1895, transmitting a copy of Col. J.L. Vance's testimony regarding Clarkson's death at Vicksburg. All are in very good or better condition.
