[USS Kearsarge] Civil War Era Autograph Letter while at sea. Three and one-quarter pages, 5" x 7.75", "At Sea, Cruising," August 12, 1863. The letter is begun on August 12 and continues on August 29. Written by "William" to his "Dear brother Charlie," aboard the sloop-of-war USS Kearsarge as she sailed around the Azores. He tells of some goings-on aboard the ship, including the transport of "a party of ladies and gentlemen...They all had a nice time and enjoyed themselves very much," and their next destination: "We expect to go to Europe...Very likely we may go to France or Portugal." The Kearsarge is best known for its battle with, and sinking of, the Confederate raider CSS Alabama at the Battle of Cherbourg off the coast of France. Folds and some ink bleeding.
