    Description

[United States Navy]. Large Archive Related to Commodore George W. Storer. George Washington Storer (1789-1864) served a long career - nearly fifty-five years - in the U.S. Navy, commanding such ships as the USS Constellation and USS Brandywine. In 1849, Storer commanded the U.S. naval forces off the coast of Brazil.
The archive contains circulars, letters and reports associated with his service. Of particular mention is a circular offering suggestions by officers of the U.S. Navy "respecting the re-organization of the Lineal Grades of their Corps". The printed document, 7.75" x 9.75", is dated October 31, 1839. Two identical copies are included in the archive and each copy is in fine condition.
Another interesting example is a printed document, 8" x 10", from the Head Quarters of the Marine Corps Adjutant and Inspector's Office, dated April 6, 1848, requesting the officers and men of the Marine Corp to contribute notes and documents pertinent to the Mexican war with the ultimate purpose of compiling a "faithful and impartial history written of the service of that portion of the corps which has been on active duty with the Army and Navy during the existing war with Mexico." With the exception of the usual fold creases, the document is in fine condition.
The archive is also comprised of several interesting letters including a one page letter, 7.75" x 10", signed by Elisha Whittlesey, General Agent for the Washington Monument Association, dated August 22, 1849 and sent to Commodore Storer while attached to the U.S. Squadron off the coast of Brazil. The letter invites the officers and men under Storer's command to donate to the Washington Monument fund. The archive also includes a two page letter, 8" x 13", dated December 5, 1850, in which the Captain of the USS Brandywine writes Commodore Storer about a mutiny on board the ship after he left. In reads in part "As night came on dangerous missiles were thrown at the police officers of the ship and violence and noise increased constantly under cover of darkness...they were noisy & insolent to the officers refusing to obey orders & in some cases assaulting violently with dangerous weapons the Master at Arms & the Sergeants of Marines." Also included are several extracts regarding naval ordinance including a "Recipe for Making Percussion Powder", and an 1836 dated circular giving the new powder standards for naval cannon. Additionally, a personal letter, presumably written to Storer's daughter by a friend is included. All examples are in fine condition.
