[Union Occupation]. Newspaper: The Palmetto Herald. Four pages, 10" x 14", Port Royal [South Carolina], April 7, 1864. The city of Port Royal had been under Federal control since November 1861 and was one of the first attempts by the North to reconstruct the ways of their Southern brethren. The founders vow that the aim of the paper is to provide "a truthful record of what occurs in the Department of the South, and among the fleets of the South Atlantic Blockading Squadron," they further promise to "strengthen our Army and Navy in their labors, and to help them on to a speedy, glorious and final success."

This, the sixth issue, contains news regarding female spies, the completion of the ironclad Monadnock, the latest "affairs in Florida," and the enlistment of colored troops within the Department of the South, which the paper reports is "going on with gratifying rapidity. . . . [and] there is a fair chance of filling up all the regiments organized in this State to their maximum strength at an early day." Period advertisements. Folds are weakening with several tiny holes which do not obscure the text. Damage at the right edge of the first leaf does not affect the text. Light foxing and the usual age toning are seen.
