Meredith," and the date "July 1892." Surrounding the medal is a belt of 10k gold inscribed with "A. Faulkner Guards." The entirety is encircled by a 14k wreath of olive and live oak branches. The existence of militia in Texas is nearly as old as Texas itself. In 1823, Agustin I, emperor of the First Mexican Empire, gave Stephen F. Austin authority to "to organize the colonists into a body of the national militia." Their mission was similar to traditional militia in the United States: defend the settlements against invasion (including Indian raids on the frontier), put down insurrection, and, if needs be, help to execute the laws of the nation. By the late nineteenth century, the Texas Volunteer Guard (as the militia had been known since 1879) was comprised forty-seven companies (38 white and 9 "colored"). With the passage of the Militia Act of 1903, the Texas Volunteer Guard was reorganized into the Texas National Guard.

    C. Spencer Meredith (1868-1944) was a druggist who served as mayor of Calvert, Texas, and member of the Texas State Pharmaceutical Association.
