    Description

[Texas Revolution] Sabine County: Texas First Class Head Right Grant. Signed by "John Boyd" as president, "John McRae" as associate commissioner, and attested to by "William H. Harris". Two pages, 8" x 9.75", March 15, 1838, Sabine County. This partly printed manuscript reads in part: "This is to certify That Thomas H. Preston ass[ignee] of Humphry Thompson has appeared before us, the Board of Land Commissioners for the County of Sabine, and proved according to law, that he arrived in this country in the year 1833 and that he is a married man and entitled to One League & Labor of Land, upon the condition of paying at the rate of $3.50 for every labor of Irrigable Land $2.50 for every labor of Temporal or Arable Land and $1.20 for every labor of Pasture Land, which may be contained in the survey secured to him by this Certificate." Head Right grants were issued to individuals by Boards of Land Commissioners in each county. A First Class Head Right Grant was issued to every free white person who arrived in Texas before independence, March 2, 1836. Heads of families received one league (4,428 acres) and one labor (177.1 acres), while single men received 1/3 league (1,476.1 acres).

As recorded on the verso, less than two months after receiving the land, Preston sold the "League & Labor of Land to Wm. H. Harris" on May 8, 1838, signed again by Preston, Boyd, McRae, and a notary public. John Boyd settled in Texas in 1835. He fought in the Revolution and represented Sabine County in the first and second congresses of Texas. He moved to Robertson County in 1845. This Texas Republic document, with notary's paper seal, is very fragile with chipping and some separation at the folds. Even though a small piece is missing near the top, all text is present and easily read in bold ink.

The pre and post sales experience was wonderful and flawless. Heritage has the best in-house operation I have ever seen and their people are not only professional but fun to work with, especially Steve C.

As for Heritage's online system… Yes the interface is more complex than what we are used to with SAN but what is behind that interface is amazing for sellers and buyers alike. It is real time and for a real serious auction buyer there is nothing better in the auction industry, bar none.
