[Texas Rangers]. Wilburn H. King Carte de Visite, circa 1870s. 2.5" x 4". King's name and rank are written in modern ink on the recto, with biographical notes in pencil on the verso.

At the onset of the Civil War, King moved to Texas and joined the 18th Texas Infantry. He was quickly promoted to colonel and, in April 1864, was badly wounded at Sabine Cross-Roads. Promoted again, this time to brigadier general by General Kirby Smith, King soon took command of John Walker's Texas Division, where he remained until the end of the war. After the war, King purchased a sugar plantation in Central America and lived there for a short time before returning to Sulphur Springs, Texas, and serving in the Texas House of Representatives. He later served as adjutant general of Texas from 1881-1891, and served effectively over the Frontier Battalion Rangers. Before his death in 1910 King penned "A History of the Texas Rangers" which was included in "A Comprehensive History of Texas" by Dudley Wooten in 1898.
