[Texas Rangers]. Colt "Walker" Revolver Cylinder Scene Proof Plate. This magnificent engraving, featuring a battle between Texas Rangers and Indians, is stamped onto a 5.75" x 1.75" piece of steel. Scenes such as these were often roll-engraved onto the cylinders of early revolvers and oftentimes featured the name of the model of the gun on the engraving, in this case "Colt's Patent/Model U.S.M.R." Engraved by steel engraver Waterman Lilly Ormsby, an accomplished New York engraver of bank notes, it was featured on both the Walker and Dragoon Model Colt revolvers. Two small mounting holes at either end.

The engagement shown is based on events during the Battle of Walker's Creek, June 9, 1844. While out on patrol and preparing to make camp, legendary Texas Ranger Captain John Coffee "Jack" Hays and fourteen Rangers were set upon by a party of seventy to eighty Comanche Indians led by the war chief, Yellow Wolf. The Rangers, each armed with two new Colt Paterson revolvers, immediately mounted and rode out to meet their foe. Hays cleverly rode around the party and came up behind them, culminating in a one hour long, three mile chase. In the end, Yellow Wolf was killed by a shot to the head from Robert Addison "Ad" Gillespie at a distance of thirty yards and the war party scattered. The Comanche lost upwards of fifty men killed or wounded with only one Ranger killed and four wounded, among them Samuel H. Walker, the co-designer of the Walker Model Colt upon which this engraving was placed. It is thought that Walker may have drawn the original sketch himself.
