[Texas Military Institute, Austin]. John Garland James (3) Letters to C. Anson Jones, son of the late president of the Republic of Texas. Three letters, totaling 8 pages, approximately 5.5" x 8". James writes as superintendent of the Texas Military Institute, and two of the letters are on TMI letterhead. The earliest letter in the group is dated November 11, 1874, and requests a "likeness of your distinguished father." James explains that they are in the process of erecting a hall for the cadets and the pictures "are to be used to decorate the walls." He adds that Colonel Guy M. Bryan, who is much involved in the project, "is now having a portrait of Stephen F. Austin to add to the collection." In a letter dated May 31, 1875, James notifies Jones that the "portrait of your distinguished father came safely to hand." The last letter in the group is dated February 28, 1876; James writes to Jones about his plans to compile a "volume of the Sate papers of the Republic of Texas, to be composed of the Inaugurals, Valedictories, and Messages of the Presidents and Vice Presidents." He lays out in great detail his goals and asks for Jones' assistance in securing materials for this project.

The lot includes two original transmittal cover as well as a printed circular circa 1874 listing courses offered, costs, and all information for prospective applicants hoping to attend TMI in September 1874. Signed in type by John Garland James. The Texas Military Institute was originally founded in Bastrop, but moved to Austin in 1870 because of low attendance. James, a Confederate veteran, served as its superintendent until 1879, when he and all of the school's faculty were hired on by Texas A & M. From the Robert E. Davis Collection.

Condition: All letters have the usual mail folds. November 11, 1874 letter and circular have heavy dampstaining. A third, unrelated cover is included in the group.

The pre and post sales experience was wonderful and flawless. Heritage has the best in-house operation I have ever seen and their people are not only professional but fun to work with, especially Steve C.

As for Heritage's online system… Yes the interface is more complex than what we are used to with SAN but what is behind that interface is amazing for sellers and buyers alike. It is real time and for a real serious auction buyer there is nothing better in the auction industry, bar none.
