[Texas, C.S.A.]. Manuscript Circular Regarding Salary Adjustments to Compensate for Depreciation of Currency. One page, 8" x 10.25", Houston, [Texas]; February 6, 1864. A manuscript period copy of a circular in an unidentified hand signed on behalf of Sackfield Maclin, Chief of Commissary Subsistence Department for the State of Texas, announcing the planned reduction in salary for sub-agents used by district commissaries in the state. With two additional signatures below attesting that it is a true copy sent in an official capacity. Filing docket on verso. From the Robert E. Davis Collection.
Condition: The draft circular has horizontal and vertical folds, with some discoloration and creasing at top and bottom.

    More Information:

Sackfield Maclin served as a paymaster in the United States Army before he joined the army of the Confederate States of America, serving as a major and chief of the Commissary Subsistence Department for the State of Texas.

The present Salary of $170 per Month to Sub-Agents for purchasing the surplus Subsistence Stores in the State, is allowed for the present, on account of the great depreciation of the currency. So soon as the Confederate Money becomes more valuable, the Salary will be reduced to a proper pay.

District Commissaries will forward to each Sub-Agent a copy of this letter.
