[Spanish Texas]. Champ d'Asile Engraving promoting the French colony of Champ d'Asile in Texas. 12.75" x 10" (sight; framed to an overall size of 14.25" x 11.5"). The engraving features a scene of French veterans of the Napoleonic Wars with family members developing the Champ d'Asile settlement in 1818 along the Trinity River. Text in French appears below the engraving describing the scene. Joseph Pomel served as the engraver, and Charles Chasselat was the artist (both names appear below the image). Even though the veterans abandoned the settlement only six months after its founding, the French public consequently developed an appreciation for Texas, which led them to become the first European nation to recognize the Republic of Texas two decades later. Minor dampstaining and foxing. The image and text are very clear and bold.
