[Southern Christian Leadership Conference]. Crusade for Citizenship: Group of Two Broadsides Calling for Mass Meetings. The first, measuring 12" x 9", calls for a mass meeting on July 23, [1957], at the Washington Chapel of the local African Methodist Episcopal Church. Sponsored by The Tuskegee Civic Association, the flyer quotes both the Nineteenth Amendment regarding the right to vote and Article IV of the Bill of Rights (Fourth Amendment) regarding the regulation of the right of search and seizure. Notations in pencil on the verso. Moderately toned along the edges. Damage to the upper and lower left corners. The second measures 11.75" x 8.75" and is similar to the first, calling for a meeting to be held at Butler Chapel A.M.E. Zion Church on June 25, [1957], also sponsored by The Tuskegee Civic Association. Areas of light waterstaining.

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., president of the SCLC, launched the Crusade for Citizenship in the latter half of 1957 with the goal of registering two million black voters by the 1960 presidential election. According to the SCLC, there were approximately 4.98 million potential black voters in the South at the time, yet only 25% of them voted or were registered to vote. The majority of states in the South required a literacy test to vote, thereby "curbing the Negro vote." The Crusade was a non-partisan movement which would hold registration clinics and workshops for leaders and utilize "public meetings and all mass communication media," all the while upholding Dr. King's philosophy of non-violent resistance. In the end, the Crusade was a failure. From the Maude Ballou Civil Rights Papers.
