[Slavery]. Union Soldier's Autograph Letter. Four pages of a bifolium, 8" x 10", Hudson [New York], April 6, 1862. Writing to a classmate regarding his application to join his regiment, in part: "I must say that I at present see no signs of it [the war] ending, after the Senate passed the Bill for the emancipation of slaves in the District of Columbia, it becomes a matter of life and death with the rebels, for if they take their slaves away from them they might as well kill them at once, as that is all they have to depend upon . . . These infernal abolitionists in this part of the country will listen to nothing but the total abolition of slavery, that the South will never submit to, until they are entirely wiped out and I am affraid [sic] it will take sometime to do that." Folds. Small .25" tear at the right edge of the first page.
