[Slavery - Port Royal Experiment]. Plantation Title. Single sheet, printed on both sides, 13" x 16.25", Johns Island [South Carolina], January 1, 1841, acknowledging the sale "of a lot of land" from Solomon Legare, a prominent planter, to Dr. Charles Tennent for the sum of $500. A notation under the description of the plot dates from the Civil War and reads, "This Property is Confiscated / by me / F.E. Morse / Co "A" 6th Conn Vols." It is unclear when Private Frank Morse took the property, but it was sometime before July 1863 when he was wounded at Fort Wagner, South Carolina. Morse was killed the following year at the Second Battle of Deep Bottom. Folds are very weak with separation and paper loss throughout; some areas have been repaired on the verso. Light to moderate foxing.

The South Carolina Sea Islands were captured in the first months of the Civil War and remained in Federal hands until war's end. During the occupation, an experiment in reconstruction was underway in which confiscated plantations (which had been abandoned by their white owners) were turned over to recently freed slaves, some 10,000 in all. Taught to be self-sufficient with the help of Northern charities, the newly freed men proved to be completely capable of running a plantation without white intervention or leadership. Unfortunately, the experiment was for naught when, in 1865, President Andrew Johnson returned the land to their white owners.

More Information: A notation near the lower edge indicates that the confiscation of the plantation was authorized by Secretary of War Edwin Stanton.
