    Description

[Slavery]. Handwritten Deposition in a Case of Disputed Ownership of a Slave in Texas. 27 pages (recto only), 8" x 11.75"; Montgomery County, Republic of Texas; circa 1842. Manuscript copy of multiple depositions taken in a case regarding ownership of a slave. Montgomery County records list two cases for Joseph Floyd vs Milton Estill; but the depositions here appear to be about establishing the ownership of several slaves and whether they belonged to Dr. Joseph Floyd or a Dr. McCleary. One of the slaves was stolen by a Thomas Knight, and Floyd had placed the slave with Milton Estill until the courts could establish ownership. McCleary and Floyd lived together, but it was unclear who was the guest, and who had claim to the slaves. The deposition ends with a clerk's signature, but it is not clear if the deposition is complete. Pagination begins with number 94, followed by pages numbered 68-93.

Condition: There are multiple emendations, suggesting this may be a working draft. Bold ink, light toning at edges.
