    [Slavery]. Claybrooke Family Grouping of Receipts and Letters, covering the antebellum, Civil War and Reconstruction period. The receipts include payments for bonds, monies received for the sale of beef, and slavery related material. There are a total of four slavery related documents: One document lists 12 slaves by name and assigned value, to be used as an "advancement" to be divided equally amongst three Claybrooke siblings. A second document provides an account of settlement for the siblings, and lists value of "negroes" as part of the accounting. A receipt for $65 for "Georges work [for] 65 days", and a Reconstruction era accounting for "John Jackson Colored" listing costs for goods purchased and money borrowed. In addition to the Claybrooke family receipt, there is also a group of receipts related to the Coleman family from Richmond, Virginia, covering the same period.

    The Claybrooke family plantation, Brookeville (located in Louisa County, Virginia), was purchased in 1818 and consisted of more than 447 acres. The family affairs were primarily handled by James Overton Claybrooke, and the plantation eventually grew to encompass more than 1,400 acres. The various receipts and capture a snapshot of the day to day financial activities of a plantation, in particular the Civil War years. Overall condition is very good to near fine, with even toning and usual mail folds.
