[Second Seminole War]. Henry Ferris Letter Written from his Plantation in Florida. Two and three quarter pages with integral cover, 7.75" x 10". "Plantation Florida"; December 13, 1835. Ferris is writing to his brother Claiborne, sending congratulations on his recent appointment. A recent transplant to Florida, he expresses concern about the current situation with the Indians in the area. He writes: "I have not much news to communicate except that we are like to have an Indian War in this place but I am in hopes it will be confide to the interior of the County about the nation which is 100 miles west of this if they show their Red faces about here I shall make my exit directly for I have no idea of a bush fight with those Chaps. They are too quick sighted for me they can see a man through a pine tree and shoot him round it. I will retreat to St. Augustine and from the City in the fort that cost the King of Spain enough to build it of Gold there I can have an equal chance with them..."

Ferris had purchased a plantation in 1834 located approximately 17 miles north of St. Augustine. His is an early letter with news of Indian unrest. The Dade Massacre would occur to weeks later on December 29, and the Second Seminole War would begin in earnest. The war raged until 1842.

Flattened folds and gently toned. There is a tear on the integral cover affecting three lines of text at the end of the letter; and paper loss where the seal has been removed affecting a couple of words of text.

The pre and post sales experience was wonderful and flawless. Heritage has the best in-house operation I have ever seen and their people are not only professional but fun to work with, especially Steve C.

As for Heritage's online system… Yes the interface is more complex than what we are used to with SAN but what is behind that interface is amazing for sellers and buyers alike. It is real time and for a real serious auction buyer there is nothing better in the auction industry, bar none.
