    Description

[Sam Houston]. Uriah Veeder, a Prospective Emigrant, Letter to Sam Houston Seeking Advice and Information About Texas. Two-page letter with integral address cover, 7.75" x 9 7/8", Auburn, Cayuga County, New York; January 11, 1854. A letter to Houston concerning possible emigration to Texas with questions about the availability of white laborers in a slave state. An interesting letter written by a man considering moving his family from a free Northeastern state to the Southern slave state. At the time of this letter, Sam Houston was representing Texas in the United States Senate.
Condition: The letter has the usual mail folds, light toning, with fragile paper that shows burns marks along the right hand edge resulting in bits of paper loss, most notably at lower right corner.

    More Information:

    My Dear Sir,

I am thinking of emigrating to the state you represent in the Senate of the United States, and will take it very kind in you if you will inform me what portion of your state is now offering the greatest inducements to settlers. I am in the decline of life with a small family and moderate means, not sufficient to purchase a plantation, but should like either to go in some mercantile business or purchase a few hundred acres of land with a view of raising stock. My eldest daughter is well qualified for teaching. What encouragement do teachers meet with? I do not expect to live entirely without attending to some business myself, how is it: is labor considered degrading in a white man? Are there respectable white persons who actually perform manual labor? I should aim for a healthy location, one in which even me from the north would be likely to enjoy good health. You will readily see my object in writing you is to obtain such information from you as is necessary to come to some conclusion about settling in Texas. Please give me the price of lands in different locations, the price of produce and stock, cows, horses, hogs..In short, give us all that an emigrant would wish to know in regard to things in your state. I should like to know the best mode of travel to the place of destination from New York City, whether by steamer, packet or railroad. Are there any white laborers in your state who can be hired to work on the farm or workshop for wages by the day or month? I request your earliest attention to this matter and if your time is entirely taken up with the press of public business be kind enough to get some of your friends to answer my inquiries.

I have the honor to be

    Your most humble servant.

    Uriah Veeder

This was my first time dealing with an auction house, and I am 100% completely impressed with Heritage. There is not an aspect of this process that I have a critique for.
