[Sam Houston]. Lock of Andrew Jackson Houston's Hair. A substantial lock of hair, 2" in length, tied together with beige thread. The hair is light brown in color with a good amount of grey mixed in; it is housed in an envelope imprinted with Houston's address in Washington, D.C. Senator Houston, son of Sam Houston and named for Andrew Jackson, had been appointed to the U.S. Senate and took office on April 12, 1941. He fell ill shortly after his arrival in Washington and died on June 26, 1941. Although it was originally believed that the lock of hair was Sam Houston's, the circumstances of Andrew's death and the directive typed on the envelope directing that it be given "Senator Houston's daughter" makes it more plausible that the hair is Andrew's. The lock of hair is accompanied by a letter attesting to its provenance. According to the letter, the lock of hair was found in a box of Houston family correspondence and documents in a Texas home of Houston's descendants.
Condition: The envelope has age toning and soiling; it has been torn open along the right.
