    [Salem Witch Trials]. Periodical: The Athenian Mercury. Vol. 9, No. 4. Two pages, 6.5" x 11.75" (sight), London, December 24, 1692. Containing an advertisement, found on the verso, regarding the publishing of Puritan minister Cotton Mather's work, Wonders of the Invisible World, about the witch scare at Salem, Massachusetts, in part as written: "Next Thursday will be Published The Wonders of the Invisible World, being Observations as well Historical as Theological, upon the Nature, the Number, and the Operations of the DEVILS. Accompany'd with some Accounts of the grievous Molestations by Dæmons and Wichcrafts, which have lately Annoy'd the Countrey of New-England, and the Tryals of some Eminent Witches Executed up Occasion thereof, with several Remarkable Curiosites therein occurring: Also a short Narrative of a late Outrage committed by a Knot of Witches in Swedeland. Written by Cotton Mather." Fine. Matted and framed to an overall size of 10.5" x 15.75".

    Published in London twice a week from 1690 through 1697, The Athenian Mercury was the mouthpiece of The Athenian Society, a panel of experts who would answer the questions of readers, credited with giving rise to the advice column.
