    [Revolutionary War]. Regimental Pay Warrant to Colonel Paul Dudley Sargent of the 16th Regiment of Foot (16th Continental Regiment). Two pages, 9.5" x 14", Boston, July 17, 1776, ordering Ebenezer Hancock as Pay Master General to "Pay to Col. Paul D. Sargent one Thousand five hundred & forty nine Pounds, equal to five Thousand one Hundred and Sixty three 1/3 Dollars, it being for one months Pay for the Sixteenth Regt of Foot in the Service of the united Colonies, under his Command, for the Month of June last. And this shall be your sufficient Warrant." The pay warrant is signed by General Artemas Ward, commander of the Eastern Department and second in command to General George Washington, Paul D. Sargent, and Joseph Ward. Ordered less than two weeks after the signing of the Declaration of Independence, the amount of the warrant is for pay to all officers, enlisted personnel, musicians, one chaplain, and one surgeon and surgeons' mate totaling 697 men, listed on the verso. Edges are chipped with some repair work to the left edge. Uneven toning and foxing. Text is bright.

    The 16th Regiment, also known as the 8th Massachusetts Regiment, participated in the Battle of Bunker Hill, the New York Campaign, and the Battles of Trenton, Princeton, and Saratoga.
