    Description

[Revolutionary War] and [New York Campaign]. Receipt for Cartouche Boxes. One page, 4.75" x 3.75", East Haddam, July 6, 1776. The receipt reads, in full: "Then Received of the Select Men of L.d Town Seven Cartouch [sic] Boxes New apprised at .6/: Each all For the Use of my Company: for the Present Campaign to New York. Received - Elijah Holmes Capt."

Two days before the Continental Congress declared independence in Philadelphia on July 4, General Lord William Howe had begun landing 10,000 British soldiers on the shore of Staten Island in New York. General George Washington, not knowing what area of New York the British intended on attacking, divided his forces between Manhattan, Long Island, and other fortified positions on the mainland. Thus began the nine month campaign for New York and New Jersey. The British would eventually gain control of Long Island and New York City, which they would retain until the end of the war in 1783, using it as the main base of operations in the north. Toned with unevenly cut edges. Small ink stain in the middle of the top edge. Fine.
