[Republic of Texas]. License to Carry on the Coasting Trade for One Year. One partially-printed page, 10.5" x 16.5", Matagorda, March 24, 1841. Printed at the Telegraph Office, Houston, circa early 1840s. By this license Geo. M. Collinsworth, as collector of revenue, grants to John Cash, master of the sloop Oscar, a license to coastal trading for one year. Signed by J.G. Lonsdale as deputy port collector for the District of Matagorda. Docketed on the verso. Document bears a large lone star at top and a blind embossed seal in near fine condition. Lightly stained with areas of moderate foxing. Edges are chipped in places. Areas of separation along the folds and small holes are evident. Waterstaining has faded the text in places, but it is still wholly legible.

George Morse Collinsworth (Collingsworth), originally from Mississippi, participated in the battle of Velasco in 1832. In early October 1835 he raised a company of infantry for service in the Texas Army. This infantry, numbering about fifty, captured the Mexican garrison at Goliad on October 9, 1835. Their victory successfully cut off communication between San Antonio, then in possession of Mexican forces, and the Gulf of Mexico and secured valuable arms and supplies.
