[Reform War]. Autograph Letter detailing the Unrest unfolding in Mexico during the War of Reform. Two pages, 8" x 10", "United States Consulate," Tampico [Mexico], 1858. The letter is addressed to "Mr. Savage," the U. S. Consul to Havana from "Mr. C" (most likely Franklin Chase, the U. S. Consul to Tampico, Mexico). It reads, in part: "Since the departure of the last English steamer the political aspect of affairs in the interior have undergone a material change. Miramon [General Miguel Miramón] is now in pozezion [sic] of San Luis Potosi..." Aside from three fold creases, this document is in very fine condition.

    More Information:

He continues: "Since Garza has re-occupied this place, he has caused [illegible] merchandise to be confiscated valued at $200,000, merely because it was imported under the Government of Zuloaga. His next act is to impose a forced loan on the foreign merchants of this place to the amount of $100,000. All who refused to pay their quotes, were imprisoned, where they were denied the use of food, water, and bedding, but they held out until overcome by hunter, when they were obliged to yield to the tyrannical sway of this imitator of the late |Doctor Francia|Emperor of Paraguay."

Inspired by the political philosophies of Europe and a reaction against the (liberal) Constitution of 1857, the War of Reform (1857-1861) was a Mexican civil war fought between Liberal forces, who wanted a more federal style of government, and Conservative forces backed by Mexico's official military, who wanted a more centralized government, even flirting with monarchy. The Liberal army was victorious and entered Mexico City on January 1, 1861.

The pre and post sales experience was wonderful and flawless. Heritage has the best in-house operation I have ever seen and their people are not only professional but fun to work with, especially Steve C.

As for Heritage's online system… Yes the interface is more complex than what we are used to with SAN but what is behind that interface is amazing for sellers and buyers alike. It is real time and for a real serious auction buyer there is nothing better in the auction industry, bar none.
