    Description

[Princeton University] Delaware Lottery Tickets (3), all dated 1772. Numbers 8793 and 8794 are together (3.25" x 3"); number 8802 (3" x 1.5") has been excised. Each reads in part, "The Delaware Lottery, for raising Fifteen Thousand Dollars, for the Use of New-Jersey College, the Presbyterian Church at Princetown. . . . This Ticket entitles the Possessor to such Prize as shall be drawn against its number." From the Papers of William Vernon.

    More Information:

Lotteries were commonly used by colonial colleges to raise money. New-Jersey College, today known as Princeton University, held several lotteries in Delaware because the New Jersey legislature did not approve the lottery system. Each of these tickets is signed in the lower margin by David Finney and docketed (two by "C. Ellery" who might have been patriot Christopher Ellery, the brother of Declaration of Independence signer William Ellery. Christopher Ellery also married the daughter of Samuel Vernon, the brother of Newport slave trader William Vernon).
